Chess - Two back-to-back wins by Checkmate in 17 moves (9 and 8) DGT e-Board
These are the first two games I played today on chess.com. I won the first in 9 moves on a classic Fried Liver and the second in 8 moves when the opponent trapped their own king.
Chess.com rated my sacking of my knight (move #6) as a "brilliant" move.

Game was coded using Python (3.12) and the Pygame Module Library (2.5.2) 1) I now have the option to use the mouse to move the Starship. I can also engage the force shield with the left-mouse button. Otherwise, ship is moved with the keyboard arrow keys. 2) Weapon refreshments at 200-point intervals (up to 800) are now added to the existing totals. The screen background changes at 100-point int...

Quite a few changes; many of the images have been updated. Statistics are now displayed at the game completion, and the data and high scores are saved in a Sqlite3 database table. Weapon count is refreshed at 200 point intervals. I was scoring in the mid-200's and running out of ammunition. Now nearly a 1000 lines of code.

We have a new weapon (firebomb) and an enemy bomb, plus a force field that blocks projectiles. Small bombs may dance and not fall in a straight line. Tons of firepower but still a challenging game setup. Game can end if: 1) One Nuclear Missile succeeds 2) 10 missiles succeed 3) Hit by either of the bombs 4) Spacecraft contacts bombs, asteroids missiles, or force field. General rule is while the...

Letting the (new) nuclear missile get through ends the game. The Phalanx will just bounce off of it so a cutter or cruise missile needs used to destroy it. Sound effects have been upgraded for the spaceship movements and background. Cutter weapon is way more powerful, taking out everything in its path. My Elo estimation for this game was 1750, versus 2350 for Stockfish, so it's obviously not Stockfish 16.1 at its highest level, which...
Chess - Blundered Queen = Short Match
Просмотров 79Месяц назад
A blundered queen will often make for a short match if it happens early in the game. When I see the knight go to h6 I often try to take it out with the dark square bishop and double the pawns, because I anticipate the knight going to g4 and trying to work with the queen (or a bishop) to attack f2. This blew up in my opponents face when I took the knight on g4 and on the next move, they resigned...

cool game! may i suggest more explosions upon destroying things?
I was recently able to improve both the visuals and audio with the collisions with some code tweaks. Most explosion sounds are occurring now with the flash engulfing the objects.
This would actually be really cool if you replaced those sprites with pixel art.
That's a good suggestion. It would make it look more like an arcade game of yester-year.
Marc if you don't mind my asking how did you get the aerial view of your DGT board? I am interested in streaming using my DGT board at a later time. Thanks for this video!
This image shows it fairly well. I have a GoPro 11 mounted on a rail I screwed into the joists in my wall. flic.kr/p/2pNKYc8 The G11 is mounted upside down, but the image can be rotated with the app 180 degrees, so I don't have to do it when editing. In my more recent videos, I have moved the table away from the wall, because the monitor was interfering with the BT when using a extension to connect the board to chess websites. In these videos, you can see the camera in the upper part of the image. Please note; This is no longer how I connect the DGT board to lichess. I now use the Google Chrome "ChessConnect" extension which is more stable. I have a video showing how to connect the extension to lichess. ruclips.net/video/bUZkNTv3WXM/видео.html
@Had2Ask awesome. Thank you so much! Looking forward to more of your videos!
Pretty well played! 👍
Very nice set up
Thanks, playing on a board feels more immersive, but it's certainly different than playing onscreen (I realize you may be referring to the video layout - it's the first time I tried this one ).
Hamilton Marc, Your videos always make me happy, so I subscribed!
I see you posted some Fortnite videos on your site. I've been trying to play this game, but the players are so skilled, it gets frustrating at times.
hi marc, good video, thank you, do you need to run livechess with chess connect...gareth
No... just add the ChessConnect extension to Chrome or Edge. If you can't find the extension in the Edge library, let me know and I'll send you a link. It does show up in the Chrome library however.
I just bought my rosewood dgt, how were u able to make it say the opponents moves out loud without saying yours?
If I'm playing online, I'm using the ChessConnect extension for the Google Chrome Browser that only announces the opponents moves. There is a dropdown menu on the extension where you can select the voice options. If I'm using Picochess, I have the menu option to turn off the user voice and select the Picochess voice option, which announces the computer moves. What set up are you specifically talking about? Picochess, Online Play with the DGT Livechess app or ChessConnect extension, Fritz 14 play with the Rabbit Plugin. Are you using a DGT Pi? I clicked on you name and saw gaming videos on your site. I've just started playing "Fortnite" and "Shadow of the Tomb Raider".
liked your setup so much I purchased the board and pieces. Now if only Id seen the issues with mac's, osx and bluetooth......
If you want to play online (chess.com, lichess.org) buy a Raspberry Pi 4b+ (under $100) and install the Google Chrome Browser extension ChessConnect. You can also install Picochess 3.2. It has about 75 chess engines. There are no issues with the Raspberry Pi Bluetooth connecting to the e-Board. Note, I suggested getting a Pi 4b and not a Pi 5. The 4b gives you more options with Picochess. The Raspberry Pi uses a Linux OS. The little red and white box you see adjacent my e-Board houses the Raspberry Pi. It has a very small footprint (credit card size). In the video you commented on, I'm using the ChessConnect extension to play the bots on chess.com and I selected "Announce Moves" from the dropdown list (click on extension to access). It only announces the opponents moves.
Do you use Windows 11 on your computer? Do you have any bluetooth disconnection problem between your computer and the eboard?
I'm using Windows 11, running on a ASUS Prime Z790-P WiFi motherboard. Bluetooth disconnecting has been a typical issue with the DGT LiveChess, Rabbit Plugin, DGT Angel, and now the ChessConnect extension. At times, I can play a full match without a disconnection, but 2 to 3 issues is not unusual, and it tends to happen in the latter stages of the game. I've had the most success (i.e., stability) when I open the Windows Bluetooth app and remove my e-Board from the list of devices and then reconnect it. After I do this, the ChessConnect extension will connect automatically without me having to select my e-Board from a list. So something changes... Personally, I think the Bluetooth in my e-Board is outdated, transmits a weak BT signal, and is probably the true issue instead of Windows 11 or the chess drivers. However, it never disconnects when I using a DGT Pi or playing a WEB version of Picochess, which uses the boards BT, so I may be wrong on this. Note however, the Raspberry Pi is physically closer to the DGT's circuit board than the PC. Also note, that the DGT Bluetooth e-Board connects to Bluetooth differently than most other models of DGT boards. Per the ChessConnect developer DGT Bluetooth boards use "Classical" Bluetooth versus "LE" Bluetooth found in most other board models
Hello, I have a question. Do You think that You can playe better over the board rather than on screen? Thanks
That's a good question. There is quite a difference in visual evaluation between 2D and 3D. I would tend to say I evaluate 2D better, but the e-Board play slows my game down to the point it's nearly equal (that's if I've been playing on the board for a period of time; If I haven't been playing on the board, it feels foreign.) The best part about the board play is it's more immersive. I enjoy playing on the board more than onscreen for that reason. Plus, when I lose, I can't just click on the new opponent button, I have to reset the board, and it gives me time to recover my mental discipline before the next match. I recently blew 200 points of my rating in a single day, playing sloppy, undisciplined, and on a full TILT. I've since got a hundred points of it back playing most of my matches with the board. You may see me centering all the pieces before a game. It's just a relaxation technique that's available when playing with the board. Personally, it was initially harder for me to evaluate the diagonals on the board versus onscreen play. I no longer feel that's an issue, and my rook isn't getting gobbled up by the opposing bishop.
Hello Hamilton Marc. I would like to contact you, a Raspberry pi 5.4 g just arrived today and I want to rate PicoChess 3.2 to play on different DGT boards because I am having connection problems via Bluetooth.
Randy on the Google Groups 'Picochess' is the best person to contact to solve Bluetooth connection issues. groups.google.com/g/picochess Picochess should connect to your Bluetooth after flashing a copy of 3.2 to a Micro SD Card and installing the card in the RPi5. You can not use a DGT Pi or a Pi wired to a 3000 clock with a RPi5. 1) Are you booting into the Picochess app chessboard? 2) Do you see a spinning icon trying to make a connection to your Bluetooth?
Avísame si no entendiste mis instrucciones.
Hi how many inch is the screen?
13" 2560x1600p I don't use it anymore and switch between 3 devices with the 27" monitor's input menu.
Nice video
Are your pieces standard or weighted? Do you think the standard ones have sufficient weight? I see that the Royal weighted are quite expensive.
No issues with weight for the Royal and Classic pieces, the Timeless pieces are simply too light, and I suggest you source them as weighted. I have no experience with the Ebony or FIDE. However, I think the Ebony would be fine unweighted, but the FIDE might need to be weighted due to their height making them morely likely to tumble over is inadvertently touched.
Thanks! Can You be more specific and tell me what exactly is the extension? Thanks!
You can add extensions to your Web Browser. They are like add-on apps. This extension works on chess.com or lichess.org and requires a DGT e-board. This is the link for the Microsoft Edge extension chromewebstore.google.com/detail/dmkkcjpbclkkhbdnjgcciohfbnpoaiam For Google Chrome; goto manage extensions and search for 'Chessconnect' is web store and install it. If you search the chess.com forum for 'Chessconnect', there is 26 pages of user discussions on this extension. This link should get you there: www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/chessconnect-a-chrome-extension-for-chessnut-air-and-chessnut-pro-smartboards
@@Had2Ask thanks!
Can You castle on board?
Yes, the extension recognizes a castle (long or short) on the board. The video before this of an online match, shows a castle on move #16. It will also notify you if you have a piece on the board out of position. The extension is a considerable update over the DGT Live Chess driver (last updated in 2015) and a previously released extension that did not recognize a castle or a move when you put the king in check.
Well played! I like your videos :)
Nice. more videos!
playing like Gukesh :D nice
Sí! ❤
Very cool setup
This wiring diagram you have used to connect a DGT 3000 with a raspberry PI 5?
I haven't done that because Picochess won't run (yet) on a RPi5. Currently limited to a 4b for the DGT Pi or 3000 clock. The WEB version will run on an RPi5 independent of the fore mentioned devices. This is a post I made for connecting those devices (see description under photo). flic.kr/p/2oSFj5n
@@Had2Ask Thanks a lot for your help !
So you switched PIs (3b to 4b) inside of the DGT PI?
Yes, the 4B requires a bit of grinding on the plastic case and the GPIO connections are different for two wires (12 goes to 19, and 35 goes to 23). I also installed a PMW fan, custom heatsink and lights.
Wow, that's a neat solution! I don't reckon, DGT will be upgrading the DGT PI anytime soon!?
Eventually, the Pi 3b and 3b+ will no longer be supported (i.e., manufactured). At some point it may get an upgrade. I do not see it happening anytime soon. However, you can drop a 3b+ into the DGT Pi with no modifications and the same wiring and it really does help its performance. Especially if you communicate with it using OpenSSH. Here's an image of a swap I did about 3 years ago between the 3b and 3b+ flic.kr/p/2mkquS1 ... and how it looks now flic.kr/p/2p48ums
Did you also consider 12. Nd5 or even earlier?
I remember the knight move I made late was just wrong. I don't remember the 12th move. I'll have to look at the PGN data on that one.
Thank you for showing, this seems like a good setup. Would it be possible to have the opponent moves shown on the DGT clock instead of audio annouincements? Would a USB board also work? For some reason my DGT USB boards have connection breakups with the apps I tested on an Android phone.
The DGT clock has no part in the online play it's the PC and board. I believe it's safe to say 'No'. USB would work for online play. If you are Windows based, I'd suggest the DGT driver LiveChess over the Android offerings (e.g., white pawn).
@@Had2AskThank you, I will look into the windows drivers again. The last time I tried that must be 5 years ago. I found that the DGT drivers combined with a Windows program like Fritz or Arena caused sometimes "shadow pieces" and other problems, while my two USB mini boards run fine with DGT PI (without any further calibration). Also, when I connect the board directly to an Android phone ( OTG USB- C to USB mini) connection breakups occur. So I wondered, if upgrading the boards to USB-C would help with that? DGT is offering an upgrade kit. Which is fantastic lifecycle and consumer management btw. I am intersted to see, if Chessnut and the likes will consider this further down the road (if they make it that far).
Hello, do you know some tutorial to install picochess in a Raspberry PI? Thanks !
ruclips.net/video/TvWe5PEj-0o/видео.html
How did you get the video output on that display? Thanks David
David, There are two methods. In the video, I have an HDMI cable connected between the Raspberry Pi and the 10" monitor. I'm using a desktop version of Picochess 3.2 and simply start the Picochess app. However, if I'm running a non-desktop version of Picochess, I use Windows to duplicate the display to the 10" monitor, then start a WEB browser in Windows, and type the IP address of the Raspberry Pi into the Browser (e.g., 192.168.1.24). You can find the Raspberry Pi IP address in the under the Pi's menu (System > Information > IP Address), or it should be listed under your routers connected devices.
@@Had2Ask Thank you for your answer. I thought you use only DGT PI.
Hello, can you explain in a video how did you set up the system with the blackberry and picochess ?
I believe I can do it in a few sentences. 1) You purchase a Raspberry Pi. 2) You download Picochess 3.2 from the Goggle Groups forum "Picochess". 3) You flash (copy) this image to a Micro SD card using the app Win32Disk Imager. 4) You insert the card into the Pi. 5) Connect an HDMI cable between the Pi or your monitor and start the Raspnerry Pi. .... Alternately, you can connect the Raspberry wirelessly to your PC and then bring up a WEB browser and type the IP address of the Raspberry Pi into the browser. Example: 192.168.1.24. *You now have about 60 different chess engines to play.
@@Had2Ask thanks a lot for your answer! 👍
And if you want an off-net setup, you can configure the Pi to create a Hotspot where you can connect your mobile to (to be able to see /operate the GUI) while playing over the board
can you make video on IR sensors
Is there one in particular you want to see?
Did you not use a pull-up resistor for the tachometer pin?
The pull up resister is built into the Noctua 4 pin fan.
Great series of videos Marc - thanks for sharing. Would you also describe how you are connected between the DGTPi , DGT board, and monitor / PC?
You need an e-board and electronic chess pieces... The e-board is connected to the Raspberry Pi in the DGT Pi by Bluetooth. I'm directly connected to the 10" monitor by an HDMI cable between the DGT Pi and monitor. The DGT Pi will connect to a PC wirelessly, or by a Ethernet cable (RJ45). I'm running chess application Picochess 3.2 which manages most of this. If I were playing online, I'd be connected to the PC wirelessly and running the driver software DGT livechess to communicate with chess.com or lichess.org. However, there is a new option called chessconnect (Chrome exrension) that should have the same functionality.
Would you describe your connections to make the touchscreen / monitor work like you have it - I would also be interested to know how you had that connected when you had the PC in the loop as well..
In this video, I'm connected to the board by Bluetooth and the monitor by an HDMI cable. I'm using the Desktop version of Raspberry Pi and I can get the graphical representation of the board and pieces to display by typing the DGT Pi's IP address into the Raspberry Pi's Chromium browse (example 192.168.1.27) The IP address can be found in the DGT Pi's menu options under the System/Information menu (if you are running g Picochess version 3.2) otherwise it should be found listed in your attached devices on your router.
Hi marc, this 64 bit versión is better versus 32 bit, I have the 32 bit working in dgt pi and I want to know if the upgrade has any advantage, sorry for my english
I don't think you would notice the difference between 32 and 64 bit versions when playing Picochess. The 32 bit version is stable, the 64 bit is too new to tell. You have nothing to lose, if you try it on a spare Micro SD card and save your current 32 bit version.
How are you connecting it?
This is an electronic chess board with electronic pieces. Bluetooth between the DGT e-Board and Raspberry Pi computer inside the DGT Pi. I can further connect the Raspberry Pi to my PC wirelessly through my network.
Am I missing something? No schematics or anything?
Here' the source code you see running in the video. There are some instructions at the top of the file: 1drv.ms/u/s!AtQyUnq0VT846xTVc8HVSNWDXXhT?e=n0Pfl0 Look up the SunFounder (Raphael ultimate kit) schematic for wiring one LED and do 4... 1) LED diode, 2) 220 Ohm resistor Due to the change in the Pi 5 architecture, the import library (GPIO) will only work on a 4b or lower model. You need to use the lgpiod library for the Pi 5. It will allow writing of code in both Python and C.
Awesome, thanks. Do I see a transistor in there? I will go look for the info. I am using a 4b. I just ordered the kit from Amazon, thanks again.
Your kit will come with all the electronics you need (you need a 220 Ohm resister between 3.3 volts and the LED). RUclips has lots of videos; search for 'SunFounder'. All the info is online and you should be able to download the Python/C source code and schematics before your kit arrives. raphael-kit.rtfd.io I suggest developing with the gpiozero library, since it is portable to the Raspberry 5. Plus, it's the easiest code to work with. The docs cover most of the electronics younwill receive in the kit. gpiozero.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ I have a few other posts on Instagram instagram.com/reel/Cxl9R1UP4SJ/?igsh=MTZ6bDdpejc0bXMycg== instagram.com/reel/CxosnnvJtuU/?igsh=MTFqMDh2eW9mbHA3Mw== Clear image of Morse code setup with buzzer flic.kr/p/2p7ngh2 Image of Pi 4b with a breadboard attached flic.kr/p/2psBYhA
this requires a computer rather than just a smart phone right? Seems like they missed the tech of being able to simply use tablets and smartphones.
It requires a Raspberry Pi computer. The original goal was to develop a chess application for an e-board that would run on this type of computer. At the time the computer only cost $35. The current version of Picochess (3.2) which is written in Python has 50+ chess engines loaded on it including Stockfish 16, which is fairly amazing and is running on the Raspberry Pi 5. There is no longer the need for a DGT Pi (clock), plus you can play on your PC without the need for an e-board. All the source code is open-source and is constantly being updated and modified. Check out the Google Groups forum "Picochess" for more information.
Hi Marc. Happy New Year. Did you notice any improvements moving up from 4B? Is it worth upgrading from 8gig 4B?
Playing on screen with the mouse, the movement of the pieces is more fluid. I didn't notice any difference playing on the board other than the system and Picochess app will boot faster. It runs hotter that the 4b by about 10C.
@@Had2Ask Thank you
Where did you purchase the chess board and pieces.? Its hard to me to find online. Can u plz tell
Chess Central has the best prices. www.chesscentral.com/ I purchased from chesshouse.com since they are local and I trust them: www.chesshouse.com/ I've also purchased from the Amazon seller c-games based in Slovakia with no issues.
Merry Christmas, Marc! Love to see you still playing on your DGT! Happy holidays and have fun playing :)
Thanks, you too!
Hi Marc, Good job !!! I'm currently owning the same chess hardware than you from DGT... I love playing with the wood pieces and would like to get rid of my computer while playing with lichess doing what you're with Picochess desktop. So I just discover that the Raspberry Pi is moving to the 5 version more quick and powerful. Do you know if that new version could fit to your setting. Any advices ? Many thanks for your feedback.
I'm currently running Pico 3.2 on the Raspberry Bookworm OS. It's running in a Python 3.9 environment (i.e., sandbox) since Bookworm is using Python 3.11 and that breaks Picochess. I believe Picochess will run on the Rpi5 in this setup and you can use your DGT board, but it still will not run a DGT Pi or a Rpi wired to a DGT 3000 clock. The startup software ( I believe is encoded in 'C needs updated). I'm should have a RPi5 in the next two weeks. I've been busy rewriting my fan control software using the lgpio library, because the GPIO library doesn't work on the RPi5. I believe for a period of time it's going to be 2-steps forward and 1-step back when using the 5.
Hi can you tell me how to switch from picochess Web to the Desktop please?
You use the menu. Select "System" then locate E-Board and select the type of board you have. System->E-Board->DGT Raspberry will reboot and start looking for your board connection (i.e., USB/Bluetooth). Same thing going back to WEB play, just select "No E-Board(WEB Play).
Raspberry Pi 12?
I see your point, I'm referring to Debian 12 which is code named "Bookworm". I updated the title and description - thanx
Nice project. About your game: read about forcing moves, attack your opponent's king more frequently.
Thanks for the video Marc
Hi is the noctua 40x20mm version?
It's a 40x10 PWM fan (it has 4 wires). A three-wire fan cannot have the RPM's controlled, so make sure you source a PWM fan. The Noctua won't "whine" when you change RPM's, some of the other brands do. These days, I just use the Fan settings in raspi-config and set the temp to trigger at 70 degrees. It never comes on...
Why so high?
Is an ice tower needed for usin picochess? Which condition brings to high temperature with picochess in your experience? I saw with analysis and training mode Cpu temperature increases a little bit bit not so much to require an ice tower. I also overclocked the cpu to 2ghz. What you opinion?
An ice tower is not required... It's just the most efficient. In fact, you don't need a fan. The metal assembly is quite sufficient. I'm using a Noctua fan on an RPi official 4b case and it runs about 5-6 degree warmer than the ice tower. I normally run it at 20% just to slow the temperature rise. Look at my last video (12/23/23) and you can see the fan changing speeds. Finally, without cooling Stockfish 16 at level 20 (4 cores) will get the CPU to 80C at times. Still safe, but starting to get hot. To answer your specific question: "why so high"... Normally, I don't want the fan on at all and 70C rarely happens, so the fan simply doesn't run. However, I can not detect 20% speed, so I often set it to this instead of off. Here's a link to the python code that controls the fan... I'm not the author, but I made modest changes to it. 1drv.ms/u/s!AtQyUnq0VT846V9LtFxj_8toUIld?e=HFDAOX This version has my changes... Most fan control software is using the GPIO library to control the GPIO pins, however this will not work on the RPi5, so I'm now using the lgpio library that comes installed on the Bookwork OS.
My picochess 3.2 is slower than yours to move.... why?
I'm using a RPi 4b (8GB) that is overclocked to 2.0 GHz. If you mean it takes longer for the Pi to make a move, then set your time to "Move Time" (instead of Game Time) and set the move time to 3-5 seconds forcing the Pi to make quick moves. The option is under the menu selection; "Time". In the video, I have my move time set to 3 seconds. You can see it counting down after each move. Additionally, a lower resolution screen will allow snappier moves than the monitor I'm using (2560x1600).
😮thanks! Probably is more a setting issue than an overclock one I think... I am using a 2 ram Rpi4. I will try changing "move time" setting. Thanks
Can you help me for overclocking mine? Where can I find good instructions please?
Can you please send me your setting for the overclocking please? I will be very grateful for this. Thanks
Is an ice tower needed in your opinion for picochess 3.2? I saw that even overclocking rpi4 to 2gh he temperature never goes higher than 56 with analysis mode and Stockfisch 16nu at 3190 elo.... what do you think?
Is RPI 3+ with 1gb ok for Picochess 3.2?
Yes, a 3b+ Raspberry Pi will run PicoChess 3.2 reasonably well.
@@Had2Ask Do you think Rpi 4 worth the extra money? If yes how much ram? Thanks for your kindness.
You will be happier with a 4b for playing onscreen. The 3b+ will lag a bit. A RPi 4b with 4GB of RAM will work well. Prices should have dropped with the RPi 5 release. Note, Picochess will not (yet) work on a RPi 5 so don't upgrade too much :-)
